Add a max length

Use this guide to limit how many characters respondents can enter in a Short Answer or Paragraph question. For survey creators.

Before you start

• Add Max Length is available for Short Answer, Paragraph and Slider questions. It is not available for Checkboxes, Dropdown and other choice questions.
• Add the question first. See Create a survey.

Add a max length

1. Open your survey in the builder.
2. Go to the Questions tab.
3. Find the question you want to change.
4. Click the Actions button (the down arrow) at the right of the question.
5. Click Edit.
6. In the Advanced Settings panel, select Add Max Length.
7. In the Set Max Length box, enter the maximum number of characters.

8. Click Done.

Good to know

• The limit applies as the respondent types. They cannot enter more characters than the limit.
• You must enter a number when Add Max Length is selected.
• On a Slider question, Add Max Length sets the highest value on the slider. The default is 100.
