Use this guide to make a question required, so respondents must answer it, and to set the error message they see. For survey creators.
Before you start
- Require an Answer to This Question is available for Short Answer, Paragraph, Multiple Choice, Checkboxes and Dropdown questions.
- A hidden question cannot be required. Turn off Hidden Question first.
- Add the question first. See Create a survey.
Require an answer
- Open your survey in the builder.
- Go to the Questions tab.
- Find the question you want to change.
- Click the Actions button (the down arrow) at the right of the question.
- Click Edit.
- In the Advanced Settings panel, select Require an Answer to This Question.
- Enter the error message. It is shown when the question is not answered.
- Click Done.
What respondents see
- A red asterisk (*) appears next to the question.
- If the respondent skips the question, they see your error message.
Good to know
- The error message is required. If you leave it empty, InPoll asks you to enter it.
- The error message can be up to 100 characters.
- Required questions help you avoid incomplete responses. Require only the answers you really need.
