Build logic for a question

Use this guide to skip questions, or show follow-up questions, based on how a respondent answers an earlier question. For survey creators.

Before you start

• Add all the questions first. Logic on a question can only show questions that come after it.
• Build Logic is available on every question type except sections. It is not available on the last question.
• Hidden questions and sections do not appear in the list of questions you can show.

Build logic for a question

1. Open your survey in the builder.
2. Go to the Questions tab.
3. Find the question whose answer decides what happens next.
4. Click the Actions button (the down arrow) at the right of the question.
5. Click Edit.
6. Click the Build Logic tab.
7. Next to If Answer:, open the list and select an operator.
8. Enter or select the answer to match.
9. Next to Then display:, select one or more later questions to show when the answer matches.

10. To add another rule, click Add New Logic and repeat the steps above.
11. Click Done.

Operators

• Multiple Choice, Checkboxes, Dropdown, Short Answer, Paragraph and Date Picker: is equal to, is not equal and is not blank.
• Rating and Slider: the same, plus is greater than, is greater than or equal to, is less than, is less than or equal to and is between.

Change or remove logic

1. Open the question and click the Build Logic tab.
2. Change the rule, or click the Delete (trash) button at the end of the rule to remove it.
3. Click Done.

Good to know

• Logic shows only later questions. With 5 questions, logic on question 2 can show questions 3, 4 and 5.
• A question that has logic shows a Has Logic badge in the builder.
• Logic takes effect when the respondent clicks Next.
• InPoll renumbers questions, and page numbers if pagination is on, when logic is applied.
• Logic can make a survey harder to follow. Use it sparingly and keep the flow easy to understand.
